Books

a story book      Books are the most important sources of knowledge. We have learnt many things from books. We have read stories, poems, histories, reports, biographies, adventures, every thing in books. We have learnt about our country and other countries from books. Books give us not only knowledge, they give us entertainment too. Each religion has it own books too. The Buddhists have the Dhammapada, the Christians have the Bible, the Muslims have the Quran and the Hindus have the Vedas. The Mahavansa is considered the oldest record of history of our country, I love books every day.

The Elephants in Sri Lanka

ElephantsThe elephants largest animals in Sri Lanka. They are mammals. Elephants like to eat kithul trunks, banana trunks and palmyrah trunks. There fore all the elephants are herbivores. They live together. In every herd there is a leader to lead them and protect them. Elephants are very valuable animal. We can see elephants in the world famous Kandy perahera. Over a hundred elephants take part in the procession. They are draped in gorgeous materials; their ears are covered with colorful brocade and their tusks with shiny brass covers. Further we can see wild elephants in the National Parks. Some times we can see herds of twenty five or more wandering in the jungles and grasslands. Some people catch elephants and tame them. The working elephants are trained to fell trees, to carry heavy logs of wood with their trunks and load them into Lorries. During the past elephant played an important role in war. They took part in war.                   We have heard that elephants have pearls. So people kill animals to take tusks and pearls. They sell them and earn money. So some times policemen caught them and fine them. It is one threat elephants have. Some people clear woods to make chenas. There fore elephants have to suffer. The elephants lose their habitat. They come to villages. They destroy farmers’ fields and chenas. Then farmers inform about this problem to wild life department. Then wild life officers come to village and chase elephants. Some times elephants fall into wells. There is also an elephant orphanage in Sri Lanka. When an elephant become an orphan they are taken in to orphanage.  It is a place of tourist attraction. We should protect our elephants

The story

a jungle               Once up on a time there was a beautiful jungle. There were many trees, rivers, steams, ponds and many animals in this jungle.  Among the animals in this jungle were birds, snakes, lizards, tortoises, samburs, elephants, rabbits. They lived in harmony in the jungle.                   One day a man came to the jungle to hunt animals. He saw many valuable trees. He thought to cut all trees and sell them. He went back to his village and told about this jungle. After that they discussed, designed and planed as to how they cut trees. Finally they planned cut all valuable trees and hunt animals.                       One day they went to that jungle to cut trees and hunt animals. On seeing them. The innocent animals were frightened and ran away. People cut all trees. But they couldn’t kill animals, because all animals left the jungle. People missed one big tree. It is an old tree. Then the forest becomes a barren land. After some time the wells, rivers, steams, ponds dried up. People too began to die. Because they couldn’t live without water and food.                                                     Then man realized value of trees and animals. After that people ran back to the barren land. They started growing plants. Once again the wells, rivers, streams and ponds become full of water. Animals came back to the jungle. Again animals live in harmony in this jungle.
